Laging inaasahan ang mga presyo na bumuo at sumunod sa mga kalakaran, kahit na pasumala. Mas malamang na ipagpapatuloy ng isang presyo ang isang nakaraang kalakaran kaysa gumalaw nang basta-basta.
Ang mga technical analyst ay bumabase sa obserbasyon na ang kasaysayan ay gumagalaw sa mga siklo at kaya’t nauulit. Iniuugnay nila ang paggalaw ng presyo noon sa sikolohiya ng merkado na batay sa takot o kasabikan.
