Technische analisten zijn van mening dat elke relevante marktfactor reeds in de prijs van het instrument is verrekend. Daarom moeten zij alleen de koersbeweging analyseren.
Er wordt altijd verwacht dat prijzen trends vormen en volgen, zelfs toevallig. De kans is groter dat een prijs een trend uit het verleden voortzet dan dat hij grillig beweegt.
Technische analisten baseren hun voorspellingen op de observatie dat de geschiedenis zich in cycli beweegt en dus herhaalt. Ze schrijven historische prijsbewegingen toe aan markupsychologie gebaseerd op angst of opwinding. Door te proberen deze te identificeren emoties door grafiekpatronen te analyseren en bewegingstrends te begrijpen, proberen analisten toekomstige prijsbewegingen te voorspellen op basis van marktsentiment.
