Following gold\u2019s rapid<\/span><\/strong><\/a> ascent<\/strong> to the heavens<\/strong> after banking<\/strong> fears<\/strong> funnelled<\/strong> inflows<\/strong> into the precious<\/strong>, it now appears that the shiny<\/strong> metal is experiencing a markt<\/strong> correction<\/strong>. In this report, we aim to shed light on the catalysts driving the precious metal\u2019s price, assess its future outlook and conclude with a technical analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Subdued banking tensions boost the precious<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The wide uncertainty<\/strong> in the global<\/strong> banking<\/strong> sector<\/strong> even though subsided<\/strong> over the past week as central<\/strong> banks<\/strong> rushed to calm<\/strong> investors\u2019<\/strong> nerves, kept the markt<\/strong> on its feet, remaining on edge<\/strong> despite several contradicting<\/strong> comments<\/strong> from policymakers<\/strong> around the world<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last week we had Fed Bullard\u2019s<\/strong> speech in which it was stated that \u201cFinancial stress has been on the rise in recent days<\/strong>\u201d implying that despite Treasury Secretary Yellen\u2019s<\/strong> attempt to fix<\/strong> her previous<\/strong> remarks<\/strong> to be in line with those of Fed Chair Powel<\/strong> regarding providing<\/strong> ample liquidity<\/strong> to banks<\/strong>, it is still the opinion<\/strong> of Fed Bullard<\/strong> that \u201cThese developments have led to volatile trading in banking equities and increases in measures of financial stress<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This underscores<\/strong> the structural<\/strong> pre<\/strong>–existing<\/strong> problems<\/strong> within the financial<\/strong> industry<\/strong>, pilling onto the fear<\/strong> that the Fed<\/strong> may be afraid<\/strong> to proceed<\/strong> with higher<\/strong> interest<\/strong> rates in fear of \u201cbreaking<\/strong>\u201d the banks<\/strong>. Moreover, the shiny<\/strong> metal\u2019s price<\/strong> was positively<\/strong> affected<\/strong> following remarks<\/strong> by Fed<\/strong> Kashkari<\/strong> whose tone<\/strong> appeared to be changing<\/strong> to a more dovish<\/strong> outlook<\/strong>, implying<\/strong> that the balance<\/strong> of power<\/strong> within the FED<\/strong> is now shifting<\/strong> as such they may decide to hold<\/strong> rates<\/strong> rather than increase<\/strong> in the next<\/strong> meeting<\/strong> if fears<\/strong> of contagion<\/strong> keep spreading<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, the precious<\/strong> could potentially<\/strong> increase<\/strong> in price as the unscheduled<\/strong> emergency<\/strong> meeting<\/strong> of the Financial Stability Oversight Council,<\/strong> combined with an undisclosed<\/strong> bank<\/strong> tapping<\/strong> the Fed<\/strong> for $60bn<\/strong> in liquidity<\/strong> further supports that the US Banking sector is not strong and resilient<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Market Anticipates Fed’s Next Move: Potential Impact on Gold Price<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After last week\u2019s wild swings<\/strong>, the market\u2019s expectations<\/strong> seem to have relatively<\/strong> calmed<\/strong> down as markets<\/strong> anticipate<\/strong> the next decision<\/strong> of news<\/strong> from officials<\/strong> which could provide some insight<\/strong> into future monetary<\/strong> policy<\/strong> meetings<\/strong>. The possibility of the Fed<\/strong>, hiking<\/strong> interest<\/strong> rates<\/strong> further could weaken<\/strong> the price of gold<\/strong>, given the negative<\/strong> correlation<\/strong> of gold\u2019s<\/strong> price<\/strong> with the USD<\/strong>. Should the Fed\u2019s<\/strong> rhetoric<\/strong> switch back to predominantly<\/strong> hawkish<\/strong>, we could see support<\/strong> for USD<\/strong>, leading to outflows<\/strong> from the precious<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Gold Price: Neutral Outlook Analysis<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Gold\u2019s<\/strong> price seems to be moving in a sideways<\/strong> channel<\/strong> after a correction<\/strong> lower<\/strong> from the highs<\/strong> of the 2000 (R1) resistance<\/strong> line and having broken<\/strong> the upwards<\/strong> trendline<\/strong>. Overall, we tend to maintain<\/strong> a neutral<\/strong> outlook<\/strong> as long as the price<\/strong> action remains between<\/strong> the 1935 (S1) and 1970 (R1) levels with the RSI<\/strong> indicator remaining steady at 50. Should the price action breach<\/strong> the resistance<\/strong> line of 1970 (R1) that may allow for gold\u2019s<\/strong> price to test resistance<\/strong> at the 2000 (R2) \u00a0level marking a break<\/strong> above<\/strong> the midway<\/strong> Bollinger<\/strong> band<\/strong> range<\/strong> thus potentially moving<\/strong> even higher<\/strong>. On the other hand, should gold\u2019s<\/strong> price stabilization<\/strong> be maintained<\/strong> we may see it making a clean<\/strong> break<\/strong> of the bellow<\/strong> 1935 (S1) support<\/strong> line, aiming if not breaking<\/strong> also the 1900 (S2) support<\/strong> level as at this point we could expect the precious<\/strong> to also break<\/strong> below the lower<\/strong> band<\/strong> of the Bollinger<\/strong> bands<\/strong> thus we may see a downward<\/strong> trendline<\/strong> forming allowing for a bearish<\/strong> scenario<\/strong> to emerge.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
