{"id":53139,"date":"2023-01-18T15:59:52","date_gmt":"2023-01-18T13:59:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ironfx-com-php8.wp-dev.int.theitops.net\/?p=53139"},"modified":"2025-10-13T14:02:32","modified_gmt":"2025-10-13T11:02:32","slug":"equities-outlook-banking-sector-earnings-under-the-microscope-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.smartindonesiafx.id\/ar\/equities-outlook-banking-sector-earnings-under-the-microscope-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Equities Outlook \u2013 Banking sector earnings under the microscope"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So far, the results from the <strong>earnings season<\/strong> sent mixed signals to the market, as last Friday <strong>JP<\/strong> <strong>Morgan<\/strong>, <strong>Citigroup<\/strong>, <strong>Bank<\/strong> <strong>of<\/strong> <strong>America<\/strong>\u060c \u0648 <strong>Wells<\/strong> <strong>Fargo<\/strong> reported better than expected results yet issued <strong>recession<\/strong> <strong>warnings<\/strong>. In this report we focus solely on the <strong>earnings releases<\/strong> from two of the largest players of the banking sector, namely <strong>Goldman Sachs<\/strong> \u0648 <strong>Morgan Stanley<\/strong>. We conclude with a technical analysis of <strong>Dow Jones index<\/strong> (#US30) sharing our views for the future development of its short-term horizon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-goldman-sachs-earnings-flop\"><strong>Goldman Sachs earnings flop<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yesterday, <strong>Goldman Sachs<\/strong> <strong>(#GS)<\/strong> delivered its fourth quarter earnings report and in the grand scheme of things the <strong>results were disappointing<\/strong>. <strong>#GS<\/strong> shares fell by more than -6% intraday and closed the day around the $350 mark. More specifically, the banking giant <strong>missed both forecasts<\/strong> of its <strong>earning per share<\/strong> <strong>\u0648<\/strong> <strong>revenue<\/strong> <strong>metrics<\/strong>. Earnings were expected to ease from $8.25 of the previous month to $5.56 per share, yet the actual EPS for Q4 fell substantially lower to $3.32 per share. The decline recorded was close to 60% when compared to the previous quarter\u2019s performance. When it comes to the Revenue figure, analysts expected the bank to report a decline in revenue compared to the previous quarter, but the bank missed expectations, reporting an even bigger drop. Q4 revenue expectations were seen at 10.8B but the actual figure was reported at 10.6B. <strong>Goldman<\/strong> <strong>Sachs CEO David Solomon<\/strong> outright <strong>acknowledged<\/strong> the <strong>disappointing<\/strong> <strong>results<\/strong> and stated, \u201cafter nine straight quarters of double-digit returns, <strong>fourth<\/strong> <strong>quarter<\/strong> <strong>performance<\/strong> <strong>was<\/strong> certainly an <strong>outlier<\/strong>\u201d. Furthermore, he commented that the results were severely impacted by several near-term challenges, some being the <strong>slowdown in economic activity<\/strong> suppressed by <strong>high interest rates<\/strong> \u0648 <strong>high inflation<\/strong>. Regarding the fall in revenue, the CEO commented that underwriting volumes remained extremely muted in the past quarter and the bank\u2019s equity investment portfolio faced harsh challenges after a volatile year, dragged lower by underperformance in asset &amp; wealth management division. Loan loss provisions and unexpected rise in expenses put extra pressure on revenue margins, making the situation worse. Lastly, the bank announced in January that it <strong>slashed 4,000<\/strong> <strong>jobs<\/strong>, accounting for a 6% reduction, and also cited that compensation expenses decreased, mirroring the effects of bonus cuts that took place in this past quarter. Overall, it has been a <strong>rough quarter for<\/strong> <strong>#GS<\/strong> but nonetheless the CEO remains optimistic about the future of the bank and remains committed at delivering value to shareholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-morgan-stanley-delivers-solid-results\"><strong>Morgan Stanley delivers solid results<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In contrast to its competitor, <strong>Morgan Stanley<\/strong> <strong>(#MS)<\/strong> saw its share price rise by nearly 6% during yesterday\u2019s session after the release of its <strong>fourth quarter<\/strong> <strong>earnings<\/strong> <strong>report<\/strong>. The results showcased the bank\u2019s ability to navigate a <strong>challenging economic environment<\/strong>, as both its <strong>earnings per share<\/strong> \u0648 <strong>revenue<\/strong> metrics <strong>outperformed<\/strong> the <strong>market\u2019s consensus<\/strong>. More specifically, the adjusted EPS figure for Q4 was reported at $1.31 beating expectations of $1.29, yet it marked a slowdown when compared the previous quarter. Similarly, the revenue figure also exceeded analysts\u2019 estimates, as it was reported at 12.7B beating expectations of 12.5B. Nonetheless, the revenue figure also <strong>recorded a slowdown<\/strong> in Q4 when compared to the previous quarter\u2019s figure. <strong>Net interest income<\/strong> was as expected a strong suit for the bank, increasing 52% from the previous year, driven higher by the benefits of increased rate environment, created from the <strong>Fed\u2019s aggressive monetary policy decisions<\/strong>. Furthermore, total deposits from clients rose by 6% driven by increased demand for the bank\u2019s savings offerings managed by the wealth management division. However, the <strong>clear winner<\/strong> <strong>for the bank<\/strong> was its <strong>trading<\/strong> <strong>division<\/strong> whose generated revenue helped offset the slack of investment banking and asset management divisions. The bank\u2019s CFO commented \u201cThe <strong>strategic investments<\/strong> we have made over the last decade have paid off. <strong>Wealth Management<\/strong> had a record year and <strong>Fixed Income<\/strong> had its <strong>strongest performance<\/strong> in over a <strong>decade<\/strong>\u201d. Lastly, James Gorman the bank\u2019s CEO acknowledged that uncertain times lie ahead, but nonetheless stated \u201cwith a constructive outlook and a proven track record we&#8217;ve delivered thus far, we fully expect to achieve our goals over time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-technical-analysis\"><strong><u>\u0627\u0644\u062a\u062d\u0644\u064a\u0644 \u0627\u0644\u0641\u0646\u064a<\/u><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-us30cash-4-hour-chart\"><strong><em>#US30Cash 4-Hour Chart<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"975\" height=\"455\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/image-76.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-53140\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking at #<strong>US30Cash<\/strong> 4-hour chart we observe the break below the <strong>ascending trendline, <\/strong>initiated on the 6<sup>th<\/sup> of January of 2023 and the price action of the index edging closer to the 33800 (S1) <strong>support<\/strong> level. We hold a <strong>sideways bias<\/strong> for the index being confined between the 33800 (S1) <strong>support<\/strong> <strong>base<\/strong> and 34550 (R1) <strong>resistance<\/strong> level. Supporting our case is the <strong>RSI indicator<\/strong> below our 4-hour chart which currently registers a value of 46 showcasing slight <strong>indecision<\/strong> surrounding the <strong>index<\/strong> after its retracement. Should the <strong>bulls<\/strong> <strong>control the direction<\/strong> of the index we may see the break above the 34500 (R1) <strong>resistance<\/strong> level and the price action rising closer to the 35000 (R2) <strong>resistance<\/strong> <strong>barrier<\/strong>.
